Many Options For Garden Fencing

Garden fencing represents a departure from most other forms of fences, which tend to be privacy fencing in one form or another. Surrounding a garden with a high wood or vinyl fence that blocks out all the sun is hardly the greatest of ideas, so garden fences need to utilize a more open form of construction that allows the sun to reach the plants while simultaneously excluding threats such as children, pets or wandering ruminants such as deer and rabbits.

Garden fences frequently feature the same wood posts found on a privacy fence. Metal or even vinyl posts can also be used. The general idea is simply to have something solid to which the chosen garden fencing material can be attached securely. Garden fences tend to fall into several broad categories:

  • Wood posts and wire mesh
  • Wood posts and spaced wood pickets that allow light to get through
  • Agricultural t-posts and wire mesh
  • Metal posts and wire mesh
  • Vinyl posts and wire mesh
  • Wood posts and chain link fence
  • Metal posts and chain link fence

The Fast And Easy Garden Fence

The simplest garden fence is perhaps a set of metal t-posts driven into the ground and a roll of inexpensive wire mesh such as welded wire or poultry mesh. While such a fence is easy to erect and costs very little, it is not particularly attractive and tends to look worse every year as it ages and the wire sags.

Better Quality Solutions

Garden FencingWire mesh fences supported by wood, metal, or vinyl posts are the next least expensive alternative. Because these posts are firmly bedded into the ground with concrete rather than simply driven into the dirt, they retain their form over the years. In addition, due to their increased rigidity over t-posts, wire can be more tightly strung between the posts. This makes these fence styles better looking to start with and they maintain their shape as time goes by. The one problem with wire mesh fences is that wire mesh is not an especially durable product. It is made out of thinner gauge material than other alternatives, and therefore bends and rusts easier.

Top End Metal Solutions

Garden Fencing that features chain link fence fabric, sometimes called hurricane fence in certain parts of the country, is a highly durable way to keep the creatures out of the carrot patch. Chain link is a heavy gauge wire that is shaped into a series of interlocking zig-zag diamonds that is amazingly strong and lasts practically forever. It can be stretched tight between all sorts of posts and will withstand the most determined efforts of an animal to claw through it.

Decorative Wood Garden Fences

Wood Garden FenceWhile wood fences tend to shut out the sunlight, they can be built with spaced pickets that allow the sunshine to pour through the gaps. A wood fence can be constructed out of pickets with decorative tops that add style to the garden setting, which other fence materials cannot match. It can also be painted to match any chosen home decor. Wood garden fencing is often done with very widely spaced pickets to which a backing of welded wire or wire mesh is attached in order to be more perfectly secure against small animals while nevertheless retaining its structural allure.
